Fresh into the new year, we’re turning our eyes toward the up and coming film adaptation of Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief.
Based on the acclaimed 2005 novel The Lightning Thief, by Rick Riordan, this may be the start of a series of Percy Jackson & the Olympians, giving the fantasy fan club a stop gap as Harry Potter starts the final accent of his cinematic climax, and anyone who doesn't like Twilight rolls their eyes at the oncoming Eclipse this summer.

Set for release on the 12th of February 2010, 20th Century Fox are going in guns blazing with this one, starting with Chris Columbus (Harry Potter 1 & 2) directing, and a familiar cast of Logan Lerman (Gamer, The Number 23), Kevin McKidd (Grey’s Anatomy, Call of Duty: MW2), plus Uma Thurman, Peirce Brosnan and Sean Bean also heading up major characters.

The plot is a story of Greek Mythology cast onto a present day America back drop, following young Percy Jackson (Lerman) discovering supernatural heritage with the Greek God of the Sea, Poseidon (McKidd). Poseidon’s fellow overlords are very unimpressed with this revelation, and when Zeus’ (Bean) legendary Thunderbolt goes missing, all fingers are pointed squarely at Percy. As divine family battle breaks out between Zeus, Poseidon, and our old friend Hades (Steve Coogan- Night at the Museum, Tropic Thunder), the stakes are raised as Percy’s mother is caught in the fray- setting up Percy and his friends for a quest to seek out the real Lightning Thief, and Zeus’ stolen property.

A lot of film buffs are big fans of keeping lesser known actors on the front lines so as to avoid typecasts and preconceptions, but we can see some very well cast folks in this film. Brosnan is best known for is English Gentleman attire, and will be a great Chiron The Hero Trainer, and we can see Sean Bean as a fiery Zeus- and could well shake the old white hair, big beard stereotype.
Uma Thurman will also be identified by the majority for her role as The Bride in Kill Bill, but we’ll be seeing her make an appearance as Medusa, which looks to be an excellent allocation.

Fans of the book may be required to hold their breath, Craig Titley is laying down the screen play, whose portfolio isn’t big enough for this reporter to guess how good the adaptation will be, but with heavy names on cast list, and 1492 Pictures (Night at the Museum, Fantastic Four 1 & 2) shooting the whole thing, we should see a great production, and fresh story in the current maelstrom of vampires, magic and sci-fi.
When someone says Greek Mythology, we're all thinking school text books and a lot of very old films like Clash of the Titans (1981). All in all, there’s a lot of scope to see all the Greek Mythological stereotypes thrown to the winds, as the whole escapade takes place in present-day America. The long-established rules of Greek Mythology will play to the advantage as well, hopefully avoiding any baseless claims that plague a lot of fantasy films.
