Directed and Written by Terry Gilliam, with Charles McKeown, The Imaginarim of Doctor Parnassus tells the dark and quirky tale of Dr Parnassus, the one thousand year old leader of a travelling theatre troupe, played by Christopher Plummer. Having made a series of deals with the devil, played by Tom Waits, Dr Parnassus and his theatre troupe travel through mirrors and parallel worlds to rescue his missing daughter. The film maintains the necessarily spectacular visuals of theatre life and an original storyline throughout.

Ledger plays a mysterious stranger, Tony, who joins the troupe, and although filming was postponed in January 2008 when the actor passed away, the film promises to be a haunting and beautiful tribute to the talented and much loved actor. Gilliam asked three prolific actors to take over Ledger's role: Jonny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell, who portray physical transformations of Ledger's character. The three men donated their earnings from the film to Matilda, Ledger's daughter when it transpired that she had been left out of an old version of her father's will.

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus premiered at the Cannes Film Festival this year, and was a resounding success, resulting in pushing the of the release date from 6th June to 16th October 2009. Ryan saw the film at the festival and will be publishing a review on the film soon. For more details of release dates, visit IMDb.

I’ve actually heard some rather negative reviews from people who have seen the film, in regards to the plot being confusing and hard to follow, particularly with the multiple characters. However, this still could simply be due to the reviewers not clicking with the plot. Nevertheless I am really excited for this one. Not simply becuase of Ledger, but the entire premise of the film just sounds so mysterious and at the same time creepy. Hurry up and come out here! :p

Haven’t seen it yet, but am hoping to.  I too think it sounds interesting.  Mirrors…hmmm, maybe I should put some in my house, facing each other and see myself over and over.  Then maybe I could transport myself to another universe, hopefully one where HDM was made into a wonderful series of movies!
