“He is the last of his kind; all that remains of a once powerful nation. Some think he is a myth; some believe he is the chosen one who will bring balance to a world at war, and some will stop at nothing to destroy him.”

Such is the premise of “The Last Airbender”, the movie adaptation from the popular American children’s television series “Avatar: The Last Airbender”, brought live into the big screen by none other than cult director M. Night Shyamalan.

But for the uninitiated, what’s this movie about?

Air, Water, Earth, Fire. Four nations tied by destiny when the Fire Nation launches a brutal war against the others. A century has passed with no hope in sight to change the path of this destruction. Caught between combat and courage, Aang (Noah Ringer) discovers he is the lone Avatar with the power to manipulate all four elements. Aang teams with Katara (Nicola Peltz), a Waterbender, and her brother, Sokka (Twilight’s Jackson Rathbone), to restore balance to their war-torn world, while continuously being hunted by the firebender Prince Zuko ( Slumdog Millionaire’s Dev Patel).

In a land where the martial arts have blend with the manipulation of the four Elements, many are the perils our heroes must face in this adaptation of the first season of the show.

And yes, you’ve read it right. The show spanned for three seasons, and as such, a trilogy of movies has been planned.

But how did such a project landed on the hands of the director of movies like “The Sixth Sense” or “The Girl in the Water”?

According to an interview with the co-creators in SFX Magazine, Shyamalan came across Avatar when his daughter wanted to be Katara for Halloween. Intrigued, Shyamalan researched and watched the series with his family. "Watching Avatar has become a family event in my house...so we are looking forward to how the story develops in season three", said Shyamalan. "Once I saw the amazing world that Mike and Bryan created, I knew it would make a great feature film." He added he was attracted to the spiritual and martial arts influences on the show.

And it seems he’s bringing out the big guns.

Paramount is working with a budget of $100 to $130 million with the first movie alone, and estimates $350 million for the entire trilogy.

Expect to see some stunning locations (Not only in Greenland, but the rest of the set, wich is somewhere in Philadelphia, is reportedly "the largest set ever constructed on the East Coast."), and some pretty impressive visual effects.

Fancy a peak?
