Back in the Warren: Alice in Wonderland

Item published by ArcT on 15th February. 1 Comment.

One of the best-loved children's stories of all time (not to mention the most conentious), Alice in Wonderland is one of those timeless books that every generation knows well. Disney's original animated film is one of, if not the best work in the studio's history. Dadaist nonsense goes hand in hand with infallibly pure logic, and so it isn't much of a surprise to find Tim Burton directing.

This isn't the story we've been told more than twenty times by film, but instead a new imagining of Alice returning to Wonderland. For some reason, she can't remember visiting Wonderland the first time, some ten years previous. With the help of the friends she made the last time around, she is tasked with ending the Red Queen's usurption of the White Queen and subsequent reign of terror.

The eccentricity of Tim Burton's inimitable style and charismatic flair is faithfully represented by the characters, too. Alice gradually goes through an Edward Scissorhands style evolution into an empowered heroine, something distinctly lacking in a great deal of previous films. We find that the Mad Hatter is mad for the right reasons (mercury poisoning from curing felt), rather than simply bizzare. Depp is reported to have wanted to bring more to the role than the traditional crazy, so we can hope to see something more than the 'Change Places!' of Disney's first imagining. An all star cast is lined up for other roles, too; Alan Rickman, Stephen Fry, Barbara Windsor and Christopher Lee all get involved, and with the promotional material's vibrant colours and subtly disturbing imagery, it looks like this is going to be a real treat for film fans. And that's a good thing, especially for us. Why not comment and have your say?
